If you aren’t sure if it’s time to update your headshot, ask yourself these five questions:
Are you on LinkedIn? LinkedIn serves as the gateway between professionals and employers. If you don’t have a headshot, you are more likely to get looked over. If your headshot looks old or unprofessional, the HR departments viewing your profile will likely move on to the next candidate.
Have styles changed since you last took your headshot? Styles come and go, and because of that, even a headshot taken in the past few years can look aged. We’re not just talking about fashion – hairstyles and even makeup trends can turn your headshot into something of the past.
Have you changed since your last headshot? As life goes on, we all change. Our hair begins to reflect the salt and pepper of life, while our bodies may transform a bit as well. While it won’t make or break an opportunity, not looking like a headshot can cause momentary confusion and hurt your first impression.
Are you in a different career? Different careers require different types of headshots. If you previously worked in a creative position, like at an advertising agency, and recently moved to an accounting firm, you will probably need to update your headshot to reflect that.
Did you get a promotion or two? As you work your way up the corporate ladder, your headshot should reflect that. Make sure you are getting a fresh headshot after each promotion you receive – it also works as nice way to celebrate it!
