‘Tis the season for family, food and of course… photos! When the whole family is together this holiday season, take your favorite photos and turn them into fun projects to celebrate your time together.
1. Photo ornament
Little kids will especially love to see their face inside a glass ornament on the Christmas tree! Find a glass that is about the same circumference as the widest point on the ornament, and use the top to cut out the image that you want to place inside (note: you will need to cut out two of the same image if you want to be able to see the photo from all views!).
Attach to fishing line and roll it without adding creases to fit through the top of the ornament. Once you have it placed inside, use a small dowel or stick to move it around and place where you would like. Put the top back on, add a ribbon, and you have a photo ornament! You can add some pizazz by placing some glitter or other décor inside the ornament in addition to the photo. See the entire tutorial at Fynes Designs.
2. DIY Wall Picture Collage
With some large pieces of foam core boards, some paint, double sided tape, and Mod Podge, you can turn your favorite stack of pictures into a DIY wall picture collage.
Before you start snipping your photos and placing them on the board, sketch it out on a piece of paper to make sure that it looks the way you want. You can make all of your pictures the same size, or try to do something more abstract by fitting them together. We love this tutorial from blogger Bits of Everything.
3. Photo coasters
Grab small, white tiles from your local home store (usually about $1 each). Some people choose colored tile for a pop of fun! Now that you have your tiles, which should measure about 4” x 4” ideally, crop your photos to the same size. Using Mod Podge, layer the tile and then place the photo on top. Coat the top of the photo with more Mod Podge, letting dry for about 20 minutes. You can add multiple layers to make sure they really stick. Check out the full tutorial at POPSUGAR.
4. Picture magnets
Grab some flat glass marbles and magnets from your local craft store and get ready to make some fun picture magnets! For these, you will need to have pictures with smaller images that you can crop out so they can fit behind the glass marbles. Using Mod Podge and craft glue, you can post the picture behind the marble, and the magnet behind that, and have a fridge magnet in a matter of minutes. See the entire tutorial at About.com.
5. Photo pillows
If you have a sturdy printer at home, you can easily make photo pillows. Take muslin fabric and freezer paper. Cut both to 8-1/2” x 11” and iron the two pieces together (shiny side of freezer paper should face the fabric). Make sure your edges stick together!
Now that you have this combined together, stick in your printer – making sure that it will print on the fabric, not freezer picture. Print your picture, peel away the freezer paper and sew with the backing fabric of your choice to create a pillow! These also make great gifts for grandparents, college kids and pet lovers. Check out this tutorial from The Dating Divas for specific instructions.
6. Photo bookmarks
Maybe one of the easiest photo projects you can do (and perfect for the little ones!), you can easily make bookmarks for the readers in your life. Simply cut out your photo image (creating a silhouette is fun!), paste to paper, add a tassle, and cover with contact paper for protection. See this tutorial from Come Together Kids for specific details.
